UNC Lineberger’s Bob Goldstein, PhD, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Goldstein, the James L. Peacock III Distinguished Professor in biology, is being recognized for his research investigating the fundamental mechanisms in cell and developmental biology. His lab is also developing tardigrades (water bears) as an emerging model system to study how biological materials can survive unusual extremes.
When he is formally inducted into the academy in October 2025, Goldstein will join seven current UNC Lineberger members in the academy:

There are currently 38 academy members on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faculty.
Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is an honorary society that recognizes the outstanding achievements of individuals in academia, the arts, business, government and public affairs. Academy members have included Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, Milton Friedman, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Frost. The organization’s work is wide-ranging and multidisciplinary, with current areas of focus that include arts and humanities, democracy and justice, education, energy and environment, global affairs, and science and technology.
