UNC Lineberger’s Andrea Hayes-Jordan, MD, Byah Thomason Doxey-Sanford Doxey Distinguished Professor, chief of the division of general pediatric surgery at UNC School of Medicine and surgeon in chief at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, has been elected a governor of the board of directors for the American Pediatric Surgical Association.

A pioneering surgeon and researcher, Hayes-Jordan previously served as chair of APSA’s cancer committee, in addition to numerous other leadership roles across professional organizations. Her term runs through 2023.

Hayes-Jordan was the first African American female pediatric surgeon board certified in the United States and is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric surgery and pediatric oncology. She was the first surgeon to perform cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in a pediatric patient.

In addition to her clinical accomplishments, Hayes-Jordan is noted as both a basic science and clinical researcher. In her laboratory, she focuses on the study of rare sarcomas. As an educator, she has a particular interest in mentoring young women interested in academic surgery.
