Shekinah Elmore, MD, MPH, a remarkably talented radiation oncologist and a cherished member of the UNC Lineberger family, passed away on July 24, at the age of 42. She was a pioneer in global oncology, a stellar physician, a visionary humanitarian, a wife, a mother, a sister, and a beloved friend to many.

Elmore earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School, where she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to work with Partners in Health in Rwanda. After completing her residency in radiation oncology at Harvard and earning a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University, she joined the UNC Radiation Oncology faculty in 2020.

Her contributions extended far beyond the UNC campus. From her early work in Rwanda during medical school to her involvement with the UNC Project Malawi, Elmore demonstrated her commitment to global cancer care. Her tireless efforts provided crucial support to underserved communities and showcased her dedication to improving cancer care worldwide.

Elmore’s unique perspective as both a physician and a patient deeply enriched her practice. Her TED Talk, exploring the delicate balance between being a patient and a provider, remains a powerful testament to her empathy and insight. Additionally, her appearance on the NEJM podcast “Not Otherwise Specified” in 2023, where she shared how her personal health journey shaped her approach to medicine, further highlighted her profound understanding and advocacy for patient care.

The UNC community will greatly miss her passionate advocacy for her patients, her infectious laughter and her sharp wit. A celebration of Elmore’s life was held on Aug. 10, and a recording of the service is available online.
