UNC Cancer Care thoracic oncologists joined the Lung Cancer Initiative’s Raleigh LUNGe Forward 5K Run, Walk & Rally on November 1, 2014 in Raleigh, NC.

Lung cancer survivors kicked off the event with a 1-mile walk

This was the 8th year the race has been held, forwarding the goal of providing a network of hope and action for all those affected by this disease.Only 16 percent of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer survive five years and lung cancer claims more than 160,000 lives in the United States every year.

In attendance at this year’s race were Jared Weiss, MD, and Chad Pecot, MD. Weiss also serves on the Initiative’s Board.

As the state’s leading 501c3 non-profit organization supporting lung cancer research and education, the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina specializes in connecting patients, survivors and loved ones with the medical and research community. The organization’s mission is to decrease deaths and provide support to those affected by lung cancer through research, awareness, education and access programs across North Carolina.
