Charles M. Perou, PhD, the May Goldman Shaw Distinguished Professor of Molecular Oncology at UNC School of Medicine and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, presented the 2022 AACR Distinguished Lectureship in Breast Cancer Research at the 45th San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The lectureship is awarded annually to a scientist whose research has inspired, or has the potential to inspire, new perspectives on the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of breast cancer.

Perou, who discussed quantitative medicine for breast cancer patients, is internationally recognized for his research that identified different molecular subtypes of breast cancer. This discovery demonstrated that breast cancer was not one disease but a collection of diseases with different prognoses. This seminal insight contributed to the development of precision medicine in breast cancer.

The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium is the world’s largest breast cancer research meeting, bringing together scientists, clinicians and patient advocates from around the world and featuring talks on the latest developments in breast cancer research, from the laboratory to the clinic to the community, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
