Three UNC Lineberger members are among the six rising stars in academia — winners of the Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement — who will share their research during the Het Talks at UNC-Chapel Hill’s University Research Week, Oct. 20-24.

Sarah Cohen, PhD, associate professor of cell biology and physiology, Lindsey James, PhD, associate professor of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry at UNC Eshelman, and Marissa Hall, PhD, associate professor of health behavior at UNC Gillings, were each awarded the Hettleman Prize in June. The honor included an $8,000 prize and an invitation to present a Het Talk.

The talks will be held virtually via Zoom. Registration is required to watch the talks.

Cohen, who studies how tiny structures inside brain cells work together and how their disruptions may lead to diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, will present her talk on Monday, Oct. 20. at 12 p.m.

James, who develops new molecules that can turn off or destroy harmful proteins, paving the way for new cancer treatments, will present her talk on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m.

Hall, who studies how labels and marketing shape what people buy and how stronger warnings can improve public health, will present her talk on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 9 a.m.
