The North Carolina Biotechnology Center awarded more than $460,000 in grants to support research and infrastructure needs of members of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center researching cancer and cell biology.

Victoria Bautch, PhD, professor and chair of the Biology Department, received an Institutional Development Grant of $200,000 to support the purchase of a new confocal microscope system to allow researchers to study live cell and tissue behavior. The equipment will support researchers working to better understand the cell cycle and cell signaling in cancer and polycystic kidney disease.

Corbin Jones, PhD, associate professor of biology, was awarded $260,056 to support research into producing software capable of assembling large amounts of DNA sequencing data. The software will assist research into the biology of disease and genetic disorders.

An additional grant of $3,000 was awarded to UNC Lineberger to support the 37th Annual Scientific Symposium. Held in April 2013, the event showcased members and visiting scientists/speakers investigating the tumor microenvironment and cancer immunotherapy.

The N.C. Biotechnology Center awarded 151 awards of more than $10.7 million to support life science entrepreneurship, technology commercialization and education in the state. The center has supported life science research in North Carolina since its establishment in 1984. For more information, visit the N.C. Biotechnology Center’s website.
