UNC Lineberger members Daniel J. Crona, PharmD, PhD, and Matthew Milowsky, MD, published a paper in the Oncologist that provided a systematic review of clinical trials and other studies focused on hydration regimens to identify strategies to prevent nephrotoxicity in cancer patients treated with cisplatin.

The researchers found that the best practice is short-duration, low-volume, outpatient hydration with magnesium supplementation and mannitol forced diuresis in select patients for safe use of cisplatin.
