It is well established that financial ties between physicians and drugmakers – which range from small free meals to speaking fees exceeding $100,000 – influence the care that physicians provide. While concerns have long been raised that this influence might lead to patient harms, these concerns have not been empirically testable until recently. This talk will present recent findings on the association between drug industry payments to oncologists and low-value cancer care, the quality of cancer treatment selection, and patient-centered outcomes such as acute care use, aggressive end-of-life care, and overall survival.
The Cancer Outcomes Research Breakfast Seminar Series is organized by Drs. Ethan Basch and Stephanie Wheeler. Please arrive at 7:45am to join us for a small breakfast buffet prior to the start of our 8:00am meeting. Parking is available at the Rams Head parking deck next door – we will gather information prior to the semester start to distribute parking QR codes. We can also validate parking individually so parking is free.
