Andrew Smitherman, MD MSc, is a pediatric oncologist and the Medical Director of the UNC Lineberger Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Program. His research and clinical interests focus on improving cancer care for adolescents and young adults as well as for survivors of childhood, adolescent and young adult cancers. Collaborating with Cancer Outcomes Research Program members Hy Muss, Bill Wood, and Kirsten Nyrop, Andrew is examining biomarkers to better understand the phenomenon of accelerated aging among young adult cancer survivors. He has also worked with the Cancer Information and Population Health Resource (CIPHR) team in describing rates of and barriers to AYA clinical trial enrollment in North Carolina. A true-blue tar heel, Andrew loves cheering on UNC’s sports teams and attending live music shows around Chapel Hill.
