Bhisham Chera, MD is Associate Professor and Director of Patient Safety and Quality in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UNC. Dr. Chera’s research is focused on clinical trials in the field of head and neck oncology and health care quality improvement and patient safety. He is a thought leader and innovator in the evaluation of de-intensified chemoradiotherapy for patients with HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer, has conducted several outcome studies with SEER-Medicare databases and quality of life studies . He is most interested in translating quality assurance/control/improvement principles and methodologies from high reliability organizations (e.g. Toyota) to improve healthcare quality and patient safety – specifically developing new clinical care models that are patient-centered, reduce costs, and improve the effectiveness of cancer care.
