Area of Interest

Stover is a health services researcher with expertise in developing and implementing patient-reported outcomes (PROs). She is also an associate member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Her research focuses on three areas:

  1. Clinical benefits of using PRO measures (e.g., symptom questionnaires) during routine care delivery
  2. Testing aggregated PROs as a potential quality of care metric at the practice level
  3. Barriers and facilitators to implementing PRO measures into routine care delivery

Stover serves as an investigator on several PRO studies funded by PCORI and NIH. For example, she is a co-investigator on a national trial called “Electronic patient reporting of symptoms during outpatient cancer treatment: A national RCT” (IHS-1511-33392). This 50-site, cluster-randomized trial is examining whether chemotherapy patients completing weekly electronic PROs between visits (with automated alerts to nurses) have better clinical outcomes (fewer ER visits, better survival, better quality of life) than usual care. An example of her work on PRO-based performance metrics is as a co-investigator on a study called “Patient-Reported Outcomes-Based Performance Metrics” (ME-1507-32079). This study is testing whether questionnaire scores can be aggregated to the practice level and tested as indicators of care quality.

Prior to her doctoral degree, Stover was one of the original developers of six PROMIS® (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System ®) item banks assessing mental health and alcohol misuse (U01-AR052155: Pilkonis, University of Pittsburgh). Her publications have been cited over 1,500 times.
