UNC Lineberger researchers led by Blossom Damania, PhD, and Penny Anders, PhD, published a paper in the Journal of Clinical Investigation that explains how the viral protein vPK helps drive abnormal growth of immune cells called B cells. Their findings identify vPK as a potential druggable target to block or treat cancer in people infected with the virus.

Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor in the UNC School of Medicine Department of Genetics, has studied genetic and molecular mechanisms behind immune system development for more than three decades at UNC. Now she’s helping to lead two major federal center grants to further vaccine development and boost our understanding of immune responses to viruses.

A cancer genomics study led by UNC Lineberger researchers and other scientists involved in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project, a National Cancer Institute and National Human Genome Research Institute-backed effort to create a comprehensive atlas of the genetic changes in cancer, was selected as one of the top 10 clinical research achievements of the year. The project characterized molecular changes in 12 different cancers and revealed a new approach to classifying cancers.
