UNC Lineberger and NCCU Building Oncology Workforce (BOW) Summer Internship

UNC Lineberger and North Carolina Central University invites NCCU students to participate in a ten-week summer internship program that provides education and first-hand experience in the broadness of cancer and oncology careers.

  • This program will take place over two summers with mentoring activities and courageous dialogues taking place during the school year in between summers.
  • The internship will have both virtual and in-person opportunities.
  • The program is designed for rising sophomores and junior STEM majors at NCCU.
  • U.S. citizens and permanent residents and international students who are matriculated at NCCU may apply.

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is a cancer research and treatment center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Serving patients at the N.C. Basnight Cancer Hospital, UNC Lineberger is the only public comprehensive cancer center in the state of North Carolina.

This summer internship provides the opportunity for experiential and didactic learning in clinical research and oncology careers through division meetings, journal clubs, webinars, guest presentations, and shadowing opportunities. Interns will complete a summer capstone project under the supervision of their summer mentor(s).

First Cohort

In July 2021, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center members launched the Building Oncology Workforce (BOW) Internship in collaboration with North Carolina Central University (NCCU).

Five NCCU students were invited to participate in this summer’s inaugural session. Kaitlann Clanton, Imani Davis, Arianna Delts, Chrystal Feliz-Guzman, and Cristian Rodriguez each spent ten weeks at UNC Lineberger gaining first-hand experience in interdisciplinary cancer research and developing their knowledge of the broadness of oncology careers.

Second Cohort

Five new NCCU students were invited to participate in this summer’s inaugural session. Tamia Brown, Amaya Daye-Dewer, Aries Epps-Keates, Ashley Mayfield, and Imani Simmons each spent ten weeks at UNC Lineberger gaining first-hand experience in interdisciplinary cancer research and developing their knowledge of the broadness of oncology careers.

First and Second Cohort 

The first and second session began May 15, 2023.
