The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has chosen Ronald Chen, MD, MPH, assistant professor of radiation oncology and member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, as a member of the 2014-2015 ASCO Leadership Development Program.

The year-long program selects mid-career ASCO members and prepares them for leadership through networking opportunities, mentoring, interacting with government research agencies and first-hand advocacy experiences on Capitol Hill. ASCO chooses 12 participants each year to learn the skills necessary to become an effective leader and advocate for the oncology profession.

Ronald Chen, MD

A practicing clinical oncologist specializing in prostate and other genitourinary cancers and a researcher focused on the long-term outcomes of cancer patients and survivors, Dr. Chen is a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at UNC Lineberger and the Urologic Oncology Program at the N.C. Cancer Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Service Research at UNC.

“I am excited to be part of this selective program. Cancer care is inherently multidisciplinary,” said Dr. Chen. “This program is a tremendous opportunity to work closely with medical, surgical and radiation oncologists in ASCO and from across the country; learn and develop leadership skills from national leaders and mentors including UNC Lineberger member Dr. Hyman Muss; and to be involved with ASCO to contribute not only to the organization but to the oncologic community.”

Dr. Chen earned his BA in biochemistry at the University of Kansas and his MD from Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and his residency in Radiation Oncology, serving as chief resident, at the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program in Boston, MA. During his residency, he also completed a Master of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Chen joined the UNC faculty in 2009.
