Welcome to CCSP/Palliative Care Grand Rounds

The Palliative Care and Comprehensive Cancer Support Programs (CCSP) co-organize weekly presentations on the care of seriously ill patients and their families, including individuals living with cancer, relevant to interdisciplinary clinicians. Sean Gaffney, MD, HPM Fellow

What’s the Prognosis? Dealing With Uncertainty as a Trainee

BIO: Sean grew up near Cleveland, Ohio and maintains a fervent love for all things Cleveland. He studied Philosophy and Economics as an undergraduate at Notre Dame. After graduation, he spent two years teaching at a high school in Brownsville, Texas while completing a Masters in Education through Notre Dame’s ACE program. It was during this time that he discovered his interest in health care and made the transition to a career in medicine by starting medical school at the University of Chicago. While in Chicago, Sean met his lovely wife, Katie. Given Katie’s aversion to winter, Sean was very happy to match at UNC for Internal Medicine residency.

Sean’s interest in palliative care can be traced to his early encounters with relationship formation in the midst of suffering – both while working with homeless individuals at a Catholic Worker community in Chicago and while teaching at a secondary school in Uganda. During residency, he discovered that these same authentic relationships were most often formed when caring for seriously ill patients and their families.

Having had the chance to work with past fellows and to train directly with the incredible palliative care faculty at UNC, it was an easy choice to stay at UNC for fellowship. The additional chance to work directly with Transitions LifeCare was a cherry on top.
During fellowship, Sean plans to continue research related to code status communication that he started during residency. After fellowship, Sean hopes to remain in academic medicine to continue his passion for teaching and to expand effective communication training. If the opportunity presents itself, Sean would love to be part of reorganizing the health care system to provide patients earlier, broader access to palliative care.

In his free time, Sean enjoys spending time with his wife and new baby, Maya. He hikes whatever trails he can find, loves pick-up basketball, and recently developed a new hobby of trying to keep tomato plants alive.
