Palliative Care: Sick and Tired of Fatigue

Welcome to CCSP/Palliative Care Grand Rounds

The Palliative Care and Comprehensive Cancer Support Programs (CCSP) co-organize weekly presentations on the care of seriously ill patients and their families, including individuals living with cancer, relevant to interdisciplinary clinicians. Individual topics address pain and symptom management, communication approaches with patients and families, strategies to facilitate coping and support, quality improvement and research in these disciplines.

Sick and Tired of Fatigue

BIO:
David was born on the Northwest side of Indianapolis, IN and spent the first decade and a half of his life aspiring to play professional soccer. Fortunately, his mom was a teacher and was adamant that his education remain front and center (and possibly had some insight into his lack of athleticism) ultimately shifting his focus to more academic endeavors. After spending four years at Indiana University in Bloomington rooting for the always under-delivering basketball team, he returned back to Indianapolis to pursue a career in medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. There in Indy, he reunited with his highschool sweetheart and finally tied the knot. After four additional years of the flat, Indiana cornfields, he and his wife hoisted up all of their belongings and headed for the mountains, now an Internal Medicine resident at the University of Utah. During this time, Libby and David were blessed with a baby boy, Eli, who is now almost 2 years old.
While David enjoyed his time as an internal medicine resident, those three years solidified his passion for palliative care. Right away he knew that he would take his place next to patients and families grappling with serious and life limiting illnesses to humanize their experience and dignify the individual. In addition to his clinical experience in palliative care, David also led a research project comparing outcomes between early and late palliative care referrals. He also spent several weeks working with the pioneers of a local project, Huntsman at Home, which aimed to deliver palliative care to patients in the home setting. To this end, David looks forward to a palliative care career that encompasses both direct patient care as well as a focus on palliative care systems to increase inpatient and outpatient delivery of this essential healthcare need.
David is very excited to be a part of the palliative care team at UNC! He preferenced this program because of its wonderful combination of a strong palliative care team, an innovative administration that is striving to expand the reach of palliative care – specifically to the rural setting, and because it is made up of compassionate, dedicated, and the kind of people that you would choose to hang out with outside of work. When David isn’t in the hospital he loves to put down his phone, turn off the electronics and just enjoy the outdoors with his family and friends. Whether it be having a drink by firelight or stand up paddle boarding at the local reservoir, he loves to unplug and unwind. He looks forward to this incredible opportunity at UNC and exploring this great state!
