Hospice and palliative care services address the symptom, support and communication needs of seriously ill patients.  While these services are interrelated, the roles of hospice and palliative care are misunderstood by some patients, families, and health professionals.  This presentation will discuss the common features shared by hospice and palliative care as well as their distinct features.  The expanding evidence base regarding the impact of palliative care on seriously ill patients' quality of life will be discussed.
