CCSP/Palliative Care Grand Rounds

 

Welcome to CCSP/Palliative Care Grand Rounds

The Palliative Care and Comprehensive Cancer Support Programs (CCSP) co-organize weekly presentations on the care of seriously ill patients and their families, including individuals living with cancer, relevant to interdisciplinary clinicians. Individual topics address pain and symptom management, communication approaches with patients and families, strategies to facilitate coping and support, quality improvement and research in these disciplines.

Ben Thompson, MD

Substance use and Serious Illness

 

Bio:
Ben Thompson, MD, FAAFP, FASAM, is the Division Chief of Hospice and Palliative Care for Prisma Health in the Midlands and the Program Director for the Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship. Dr. Thompson was inducted into AOA and Gold Humanism Honor Societies during his residency at Prisma Health. He received Prisma Health’s Outstanding Ethics In Practice award at the conclusion of his fellowship. His unique position as board certified in addiction medicine as well as hospice and palliative care leads to his professional interest in caring for patients with opioid use disorder who are approaching the end of their lives. He has presented nationally on this intersection each of the last five years. Dr. Thompson has a passion for undergraduate medical education, serving as the director for the Ethics and Professionalism Thread of introduction to clinical medicine. His education and leadership roles have been nationally recognized in 2024 with an appointment to the Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine’s fellowship training committee, election as Chair-Elect of the Education Committee, and a recognition as an Emerging Leader in the field of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
