Zach Kadro, ND

Introduction to Naturopathic Medicine and Naturopathic Oncology:
Training, Licensing, Practice, Research, and Collaboration

Bio:

Zachary Kadro, ND, is a second-year, NCCIH funded, T32 Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, in the Program on Integrative Medicine (PIM), within the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Prior to earning his doctoral degree in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle, WA, Dr. Kadro received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After graduating from Bastyr, Zach passed the NPLEX (Naturopathic Physician Licensing Exam), obtained his naturopathic physician license in Washington State, and then completed one of the nation’s only two-year hospital-based residency programs in naturopathic oncology at the Goshen Center for Cancer Care. After residency, Zach began his postdoc at UNC, where he is also an MPH student at Gillings School of Global Public Health, in the Leadership in Practice concentration. In February 2021, Zach completed certification in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell, Center for Nutrition Studies, at eCornell. Zach is also working towards board-certification in naturopathic oncology through the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology.

Dr. Kadro’s major academic interests include omega-3 fatty acids, plant-based nutrition, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, and mobile health (mHealth). Zach is currently working with the UNC-RTI Evidence-Based Practice Center on an AHRQ funded systematic review for the USPSTF on atrial fibrillation screening among asymptomatic adults. Zach is also collaborating with UNC investigators from PIM, Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the Department of Family Medicine, on developing an mHealth app for tracking and reconciliation of dietary supplements in the electronic health record (EHR) capable of screening for important supplement-drug interactions. In addition, Zach is conducting a scoping review of clinical trials investigating omega-3 fatty acids and breast cancer. As a naturopathic physician, Zach encourages the bodies self-healing process through the use of natural therapies, drawing on both traditional healing modalities and modern medical science through an evidence-based medicine paradigm. After completing his fellowship and MPH in 2022, Zach plans to utilize his training to continue working in research with a focus on integrative oncology and integrative approaches to chronic disease management and prevention.
