Kelsey Nestor, MD, HPM Fellow

Trauma Informed Care in Hospice and Palliative Care

Bio
Kelsey was born in Princeton, NJ but moved to Tampa, FL at three years old. She was fortunate enough to be able to move to Dublin, Ireland with her family for five years, during which time she attended elementary school and was able to travel all over Europe. She went to undergrad at the University of Florida (Go Gators) and became a double Gator after being accepted into the Juniors Honors Program, a seven-year combined undergraduate and medical program.

She was first drawn to Palliative Care during undergrad when she participated in a “buddy” support program where undergrad and medical students were paired with children with life-limiting illness. Having a love for all specialties and unable to choose just one, she chose Emergency Medicine as it gave her the ability to see variety both in patient populations and acuity. She matched at Vanderbilt University where she spent three years completing her residency. Although she enjoyed the high acuity and fast pace of the ED, she found herself drawn to cases where she was able to form relationships with patients and was able to connect on a deeper level than the time constraints of the ED often allow. She found her way to Palliative Care and was sold after doing an elective with the Palliative Care service at Vanderbilt.

Kelsey chose UNC for fellowship because she loved the warm and welcoming environment as well as the diverse population. She will be working as an attending in the ED and looks forward to continuing to build relationships between the two departments over the next year. She is still figuring out how she wants to practice after fellowship but is hopeful to some day be able to practice both specialties, likely at an academic center.

Kelsey enjoys reading fiction, trying out different Malbecs, practicing yoga, hiking, and hanging out with friends/family. She has moved to Chapel Hill with her boyfriend, Nick, and they are excited to try out all the restaurants the triangle has to offer.
