Dear UNC Lineberger Cancer Network Friend,

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the recent tragedies in Uvalde, Buffalo, and elsewhere in the US. These events have brought unimaginable sorrow and suffering to the families of those killed and injured. They have added heavily to the collective tragedy of gun violence in our nation. Just over this past Memorial Day Weekend, there were at least twelve more mass shootings throughout the United States.

I keep thinking of the terror that the victims in the Tops supermarket experienced and the national trauma as we see yet another massacre of our citizens who have been targeted because of the color of their skin.

As a former elementary school teacher, I can only begin to imagine the horror that the teachers at Robb Elementary must have felt as they took their final breaths, desperate to keep the children in their care safe.

Each of us is entitled to the sorrow and the anger that we feel in this ongoing era of extreme gun violence. Regardless of our politics, it is imperative that we come together as a nation to find solutions that make us safer and less traumatized. I hope that we can all find a way to make positive and meaningful differences in the months and years ahead.
