Swallowtail Butterfly on Joe Pye Weed

Dear UNC Lineberger Cancer Network Friend,

The last few weeks have been very challenging for our UNC family as we mourn the death of Zijie Yan, PhD who was murdered on August 28th. There is a collective sadness that we share in this senseless death. Our hearts go out to Dr. Yan’s family. I personally struggle with the seeming unwillingness of our nation to effectively and collectively confront the level of gun violence that plagues our country. I believe that we can and must do better.

On a less somber note, earlier today I stopped by our former studio on the third floor of ITS Manning. It is now an empty room, with a few bits of debris scattered across the floor. That said, for almost eight years, 3200 ITS Manning served as our video studio. Hundreds of educational oncology videos were live streamed and recorded by many of our nation’s leading clinicians and researchers. It was a privilege to be able to use the space with my talented colleagues and our esteemed guests, and there was something bittersweet about pulling the sign down from next to the door.

Moving forward, soundproofing for the new studio space on the Manning level of the N.C. Basnight Cancer Hospital will begin on September 12th. By October we should be making final adjustments to the equipment with hopes of being able to start sharing lectures with you later in that month. We are very excited about having the support of our leadership and the UNC Radiation Oncology Department to share a convenient, collaborative space with improved audio and video from which to produce our lectures. We hope that you agree when you see and hear the results. And for our guest speakers in the Cancer Hospital, it is just an elevator ride away.
