The Carolina Cancer Screening Initiative (CCSI) is a multi-disciplinary effort to improve cancer screening in North Carolina. CCSI leverages the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s expertise in research-backed interventions as well as a network of community, academic, and government partners to improve the quality and accessibility of cancer screening programs throughout our state.
Founded in 2016 and supported by the University Cancer Research Fund, the CCSI primarily focuses on Breast, Cervical, Colon, Liver, and Lung Cancer screening research.
Partnering with breast imaging facilities across the state of North Carolina, the Carolina Mammography Registry (CMR) collects and uses breast imaging and associated cancer follow-up data to improve the performance of mammography, understand factors affecting the detection of breast cancer, and provide feedback to radiologists.
Scaling Colorectal Cancer Screening Through Outreach, Referral, & Engagement (SCORE) aims to improve colorectal cancer screening rates among North Carolina community health center patients using centralized mailed at-home stool tests, or FIT (fecal immunochemical) kits.
The North Carolina Lung Screening Registry (NCLSR) is a research registry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill focused on understanding how low dose computed tomography (LDCT) for lung screening behaves in real world settings. The NCLSR is funded by the National Cancer Institute to collect information about patients receiving lung cancer screening. The objective of this registry is to evaluate the extent to which disparities in lung cancer screening outcomes exist.
Researchers at NC State* have been awarded a $17 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to explore a potential link between environmental contaminants and liver cancer. *Many researchers awarded this grant also have positions within the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
Opinion by Brooks Bell: The N.C. budget has the potential to save hundreds of lives from colon cancer. To do so, it needs to include one important thing: Medicaid expansion. If expanded, thousands of North Carolinians who don’t have access to colonoscopies will benefit from the life-saving procedure — which helps diagnose and prevent cancer.
