Welcome to CCSP/Palliative Care Grand Rounds

The Palliative Care and Comprehensive Cancer Support Programs (CCSP) co-organize weekly presentations on the care of seriously ill patients and their families, including individuals living with cancer, relevant to interdisciplinary clinicians. Individual topics address pain and symptom management, communication approaches with patients and families, strategies to facilitate coping and support, quality improvement and research in these disciplines.

Bridgette Thom, PhD

You’re Not Going to Get Just 1 Bill, You’re Going to Get 40 Bills!: Financial Toxicity in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors


Dr. Bridgette Thom is an Assistant Professor in the UNC School of Social Work, with a joint appointment at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research addresses cancer-related financial hardship, patient economic stability, and healthcare affordability, with a focus on the adolescent and young adult (AYA) population. She currently has NIH/NCI funding to develop and pilot a financial capability skill building intervention in AYA survivors of cancer. She is a member of the research committee for the Association of Oncology Social Work; the cancer health equity task force for the Society of Behavioral Medicine; and the communications committee of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society. Prior to joining UNC in 2023, Dr. Thom worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she led the research efforts of the MSK Affordability Working Group. Dr. Thom received her BA from New York University’s Gallatin School and earned her MSW and PhD from the Columbia University School of Social Work.
