We will engage those whom we employ, train, treat and serve.
We will listen. We will act.
Addressing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
UNC Lineberger is identifying ways to incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion principles into six critical areas at the cancer center:
Patient & Clinical Care
Accrual to Clinical Trials
Recruitment & Retention
Education, Training & Onboarding
Culture & Climate
Enhancing Research with an Equity Lens
UNC Lineberger is committed to providing an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and equitable.
To help us honor this commitment, we must raise awareness about – and then work to eliminate – systems and barriers. Many of us believe this has to start (but not finish) with listening and hopefully understanding the lived experience of those with diverse backgrounds.
We all have an important role in carrying out the cancer center’s mission.
This includes helping to establish and foster an environment that enables each of us to contribute to our fullest potential.
—Shelley Earp, MD, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Director
April 20, 2021 statement from UNC Lineberger Equity Council
This evening a guilty verdict was announced in the Derek Chauvin trial. Our hearts are with George Floyd’s family and friends. George Floyd’s death on a city street in the middle of the day catalyzed a nationwide examination of the structural systems, and our individual actions that limit so many from reaching their full potential and receiving similar opportunities for employment, education and health.
This verdict ends a single trial. It also reminds us how important it is for us to unite in the work underway at UNC Lineberger and elsewhere to bring diversity, equity and inclusion into the areas of:
- Patient and clinical care
- Accrual to clinical trials
- Retention and recruitment
- Education training and onboarding
- Culture and climate
- Enhancing research with an equity lens
We sincerely hope that we can continue to move forward and speak more openly with each other so that the sea change of awareness will transform into a sea change of practice.
—Shelley Earp, Wendy Brewster and Samuel Cykert
Establishing the Equity Council
The Executive Core of the Equity Council was formed as part of Phase 1 to address diversity, equity and inclusion at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
As part of Phase 1, individuals may nominate themselves or a colleague to be part of the full Equity Council.
In Phase 2, the Equity Council will establish several subcommittees charged with implementation and accountability.
UNC Lineberger is committed to the long-term work towards infusing diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the cancer center’s programs and policies. The Equity Council will develop and announce action items for UNC Lineberger faculty and staff to take, and opportunities to engage with DEI efforts.
