A Downy Woodpecker.

Dear UNC Lineberger Cancer Network Friend,

Fall is really starting to settle in these past several days. There is a chill in the air and the almost non-stop rustle of descending leaves. I feel incredibly thankful for the natural beauty of our state, and the camaraderie of my family, colleagues, and friends. At the same time, it is impossible not to feel acutely aware of the level of suffering that exists in the world right now. I have to believe that we can do a much better job of caring for ALL of our global citizens, and it is disheartening to know how much there is still to be done.

Here at UNCLCN, we have been trying to pay improved attention to our physical and emotional health. There is an ever-growing body of evidence that sitting all day in one place is physically and emotionally taxing. We are working to be more conscious of scheduling breaks in and around meetings and alternating sitting and standing. Also, having a self-proclaimed therapy dog (Ruby Mae) in the office doesn’t hurt 😉. We know that this diminishing daylight and expectations of the pending holidays can be difficult for many of us, and we encourage each of you to ensure that you are taking good care of yourself as well as those around you in the months ahead.
