Each month the team at the Lineberger Cancer Network volunteers at an organization within the local community to promote growth and foster strong relationships with the organizations that aide our community. This month, the team took their efforts to Meals on Wheels Orange County (MOWOCNC).

MOWOCNC was founded 47 years ago and has become a staple of the Orange County community. It is a volunteer-driven, community funded organization that delivers a hot, balanced meal. Along with delivering meals, MOWOCMC also completes daily check-ins every Monday through Friday to older adults, homebound adults, adults with disabilities, and those convalescing who do not have access to, or the ability to prepare, a health meal. What first began as delivering as few meals per day, has turned into a huge operation that delivers around 260 meals per weekday!

MOWOCNC is a branch of Meals on Wheels America, which supports over 5,000 community-based programs across the United States. Along with local program values of community, inclusion, respect, and excellence, the larger organization also focuses on empowering local communities to “improve the health and quality of life of the seniors they serve so that  no one is left hungry or isolated.”

This month, team members Oliver, Tim, and Lindsey assisted with organizing and packing food to be delivered by volunteers. When asked about his experience volunteering at Meals on Wheels, Oliver said “Its feels great to work with such a dedicated and friendly group of volunteers at meals on wheels!  They are very organized so there is always something to do and the time really flies while we are helping to get the meals prepped!”
