Area of Interest

I have a longstanding interest in gastrointestinal physiology and the endocrine control of nutrient handling. My lab seeks to understand the role of enteroendocrine cells in the regulation of basic cell biological and intestinal physiological functions like nutrient absorption, crypt homeostasis, stem cell activity, and cellular metabolism. We use mouse models and human pluripotent stem cell (PSC)-derived human intestinal organoids (hIOs) to address these questions, and have so far found two novel roles for EECs: regulation of ion transport that supports electrogenic nutrient absorption, and regulation of crypt metabolism that supports intestinal stem cell activity.
