12th Annual Cancer Survivorship Summit: “Celebrate Survivorship”

The North Carolina Cancer Prevention and Control Branch of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Chronic Disease and Injury Section is hosting a two-day event for cancer survivors, patients and their caregivers. The goal of the Summit is to enhance and empower cancer survivors in North Carolina throughout their lives. During the Summit, survivors will have the opportunity to share their experiences, participate in breakout sessions on the latest in cancer treatments and research, enhance self-advocacy skills, learn innovative approaches to improve health and wellness and expand knowledge on access to services and resources. You must be 18 years of age or older to attend.

1 to 2:25 p.m. Welcome, Introductions and Opening Session

2:30 to 2:45 p.m. Break – with refreshments

2:45 to 3:45 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Health and Wellness Sessions
(Select two of the five sessions listed below. Session titles, descriptions and content are subject to change. Sessions will be repeated.)

Healing Through Aromatherapy with Essential Oils
This session will help you understand the benefits of aromatherapy with essential oils and their aid in providing relief during treatment. Essential oils are natural oils (compounds) found in plants that assist in reducing stress, anxiety, pain, depression and grief.

Spirituality Through Art
This session will identify techniques for artistic expression as a tool for exploring a spiritual connection. Each person will create one small piece of art. This session will help patients explore and make sense of their feelings about cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. No artistic experience necessary to enjoy this interactive session.

Coping with Insomnia and Fatigue
This session will help to identify techniques to address fatigue and insomnia which are common problems associated during and after treatment. This session will discuss steps that may help reduce or prevent symptoms.

Healing Touch
This session will introduce how Healing Touch is a nurturing energy therapy that promotes health and well-being. It boosts immune function and improves the effectiveness of chemo/radiation, helps to relax you while reducing stress, anxiety, pain, depression and grief. This session will demonstrate how Healing Touch uses the best strategies to attain patients’ health goals that focus on wellness and healing of the whole person.

Healing Through Writing
This session will teach proven approaches to aid in the healing process of your body, mind and spirit. Whether you are a patient, caregiver or loving friend, expressive writing can aid you in sharing racing thoughts, reducing stress, easing symptoms, strengthen the immune system, shorten recovery periods, and improve family relationships.
