Using technology similar to the type that powers facial recognition on a smartphone, Charles M. Perou, PhD, Melissa Troester, PhD, and Heather D. Couture have trained a computer to analyze breast cancer images and then classify the tumors with high accuracy.

Metastatic breast cancer patients report high level of financial impact
A study led by UNC Lineberger's Stephanie Wheeler, PhD, investigated the extent and severity of negative financial effects of cancer among women with breast cancer that has spread in the body. The preliminary results were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Care Symposium, held Sept. 28-29 in Phoenix.

Susan G. Komen awards UNC Lineberger $1.1M for breast cancer research
Included in the new investments by Susan G. Komen was $400,000 for UNC Lineberger’s Lisa Carey, MD, the physician-in-chief of the N.C. Cancer Hospital, Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor in Breast Cancer Research, chief of the UNC School of Medicine Division of Hematology/Oncology, and a member of the Komen Scientific Advisory Board, for a study of HER2-positive breast cancer.

Black women more likely to report not taking breast cancer medication as prescribed
A study led by UNC Lineberger’s Stephanie Wheeler, PhD, found that black women were more likely than white women to report not taking endocrine therapy for breast cancer as prescribed, which could help explain why hormone-receptor positive breast cancer mortality is higher among black women.

Breast cancer places greater financial burden on black women
UNC Lineberger's Stephanie Wheeler, PhD, and colleagues report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology that a survey of women who were diagnosed with breast cancer in North Carolina between 2008 and 2013 found that two years after a diagnosis, 58 percent of black women reported a negative financial impact of cancer, compared with 39 percent of white women.

As a member of Susan G. Komen's Scientific Advisory Board, UNC Lineberger's Lisa A. Carey, MD, will be responsible for helping guide Komen’s $956 million research program – second only to the U.S. government in funding of breast cancer research.
