Janet Mazzurco was diagnosed with melanoma seven years ago, which later developed into stage IV metastatic disease. Fran Collichio, MD, began treating Janet with a checkpoint inhibitor drug called ipilimumab and her disease is now in remission.

UNC Lineberger donors have demonstrated the power of matching gift challenges. An anonymous coupled pledged to match every gift, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000,and within two weeks, the cancer center received $50,000 in matching gifts. After hearing about the campaign’s success, UNC Lineberger Board of Visitors members Bill and Nancy Graham were inspired to issue an additional $50,000 challenge, effectively quadrupling the gift.

Superior Court Judge Carl Fox, who was was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a form of bone marrow cancer, in 2015. Thanks to the care of Josh Zeidner, MD, and Thomas Shea, MD, and a life-saving cord blood transplant, he is back on the bench.

When Amy Charney was diagnosed with HER-2 positive breast cancer in November 2014, she told Lisa Carey, MD, she preferred a therapy that would allow her to continue her active life as a mom, wife and avid runner. Dr. Carey identified a clinical trial for Amy was eligible, and is happy to report the novel treatment proved to be effective and have fewer side-effects.

Chase Jones, who was successfully treated for stage IV brain cancer at UNC Lineberger, started the Vs. Cancer Foundation with the goal of fundraising for pediatric cancer research and supporting the needs of patients and families during treatment. Since 2013, Vs. Cancer has provided UNC Lineberger with more than $245,000 in grants, including the most recent gift of $115,000 to support pediatric cellular immunotherapy trials and research, and specifically, the work of Barbara Savoldo, MD, PhD.

Beth Silverstein’s family history of cancer led her to UNC Lineberger’s Cancer Genetics Program. She learned she had a BRCA1 gene mutation that put her at an 80 percent risk of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. Though not the news she wanted, she said the information has helped her take control of her health.

The diagnosis of stage IV breast cancer stunned Minhthu Nguyen, DDS, and her husband Padrick Barrett. It also spurred the couple to fund Chuck Perou’s cancer genomics research. Four years after her diagnosis, Minhthu passed away. To honor her memory, Padrick and Minhthu’s brother Dr. Phong Nguyen made a gift of $250,000, choosing to name the mammography reception area in the N.C. Cancer Hospital for her.
