The diagnosis of stage IV breast cancer stunned Minhthu Nguyen, DDS, and her husband Padrick Barrett. It also spurred the couple to fund Chuck Perou’s cancer genomics research. Four years after her diagnosis, Minhthu passed away. To honor her memory, Padrick and Minhthu’s brother Dr. Phong Nguyen made a gift of $250,000, choosing to name the mammography reception area in the N.C. Cancer Hospital for her.

UNC Lineberger donors have demonstrated the power of matching gift challenges. An anonymous coupled pledged to match every gift, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000,and within two weeks, the cancer center received $50,000 in matching gifts. After hearing about the campaign’s success, UNC Lineberger Board of Visitors members Bill and Nancy Graham were inspired to issue an additional $50,000 challenge, effectively quadrupling the gift.

Ken and Cheryl Williams made a $10 million gift to UNC Lineberger to fund cancer research initiatives that hold the greatest promise for cures. With the memories of the pain they experienced when their son Tony passed away, they hope the research will result in clinical advances and save other families from suffering the loss of a loved one.

When Beth Quinn was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer, she and her friends made a commitment to make a difference. They formed She ROCKS to raise funds for ovarian cancer research and patient support. The group has contributed more than $170,000 to fund the ovarian cancer research of UNC Lineberger's Vicki Bae-Jump, MD, PhD. This past September, UNC Lineberger renamed part of Bae-Jump lab space in Beth’s honor.

In 2003, Monty and Nancy White established the White Seed Grant Fund to provide seed grant support for UNC Lineberger faculty research. The couple agrees it is one of the smartest investments they’ve ever made, and they envision a day when the seed grant funding will spark a discovery that leads to a cure.
