Channing J. Der, PhD, UNC Lineberger member and Kenan Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the UNC School of Medicine, was awarded a five-year NIH R01 grant entitled "Biological Activity of RAS Oncogenes". This grant will support his studies to pursue drug discovery for novel was to target "undruggable" KRAS by targeting instead the MYC oncogene. This project includes collaborators from the Lineberger, including Drs. Chad Pecot, Adrienne Cox and Lee Graves.

The five-year 2015 Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Pathway to Leadership grant was awarded to Kirsten Bryant, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at UNC Lineberger, for her project titled "Exploring pancreatic cancer cell metabolism for therapeutic gain."

Drs. Aaron Hobbs and Angelina Vaseva, both postdoctoral fellows in the laboratory of Dr. Channing J. Der, have been awarded three-year fellowship awards. Dr. Hobbs has been awarded a three-year NRSA F32 Postdoctoral Fellowship Award and Dr. Vaseva has been awarded a three-year American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowship.

A special edition of the American Society of Radiation Oncology journal Practical Radiation Oncology features a series of articles published by UNC School of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology faculty on strategies for maximizing patient safety and quality in the practice of radiation oncology.

Tar Heel basketball Coach Roy Williams' 2015 "Fast Break Against Cancer" breakfast fundraiser featured Brigham Young University Men's Basketball Head Coach Dave Rose - also a pancreatic cancer survivor - as its keynote speaker. Now in it's 11th year, Fast Break Against Cancer has surpassed the $2 million mark for cancer research and treatment at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers helped lead an effort by The Cancer Genome Atlas Network of researchers to map the genetic drivers of invasive lobular carcinoma, the second most commonly diagnosed invasive form of breast cancer. They found that this cancer type may be at least three different diseases that differ in their microenvironmental features and outcomes.

A UNC Lineberger researcher and his team describe the design and engineering of the new bioluminescent imaging tool called the “LumiFluor” in a study published in the journal Cancer Research.

Victoria Bae-Jump, MD, PhD, has recently been awarded two grants to further cancer research initiatives: a two-year, $180,000 Collaborative Funding Grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and a four-year, $800,000 Research Scholar grant from the American Cancer Society.

Joseph M. DeSimone, Chancellor’s Eminent Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been named the recipient of the inaugural $250,000 Kabiller Prize in Nanoscience and Nanomedicine for his invention and use of PRINT, a breakthrough technology that has been used to make advances toward the development of new cancer treatments, inhalable therapeutics and next generation vaccines for malaria, pneumonia and dengue.

Ron Chen, MD, MPH, is a UNC Lineberger member and associate professor in the UNC School of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology.
