Mortality risk from opioid overdose has previously been measured in terms of thresholds of risk. Four scientists, including UNC Lineberger member Kurt Ribisl, PhD, are co-authors on a new cohort study finding that dose-dependent opioid overdose risk among patients does not show evidence of a distinct risk threshold.

Matthew Milowsky, MD, a UNC Lineberger member and associate professor in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, is the principle investigator for a large-scale, genomically driven bladder cancer study that will be the first project of the Bladder Cancer Genomics Consortium. The consortium is a collaborative effort between Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, a not-for-profit patient advocacy organization, and eight institutions.

Bryce Reeve, PhD, a UNC Lineberger member and professor in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health Department of Health Policy and Management, has received a more than $2.9 million, four-year grant from the NIH as part of its Pediatric Patient-Reported Outcomes in Chronic Disease consortium. The grant is shared with Duke University where Laura Schanberg, MD, is the co-P.I.

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers and eight other leading cancer research institutions have won a five-year, $12 million grant to try to find treatments for a group of cancers linked to mutations in the NF1 gene.

Researchers from Norway visited UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center to learn firsthand about UNCseq, a clinical trial launched in 2011 at the N.C. Cancer Hospital. In the trial, researchers use a profile of the genetic and molecular alterations in patients' tumors to try to identify targeted treatments for them.
