The Scientist Magazine has featured recent research by Timothy Gershon, MD, PhD, on the link between brain tumors and glycolysis.
Dr. Gershon, assistant professor of Neurology and member of UNC Neuroscience Center and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center , published the research in the Jan. 23 issue of Cancer & Metabolism.
The study focused on the manner in which neural progenitors rely on aerobic glycolysis, a metabolic pattern that is co-opted in the aggressive brain cancer medulloblastoma. Dr. Gershon found that blocking aerobic glycolysis by deleting Hexokinase-2 in medulloblastoma-prone mice reduced tumor growth and extended survival.
