C. Ryan Miller, MD, PhD, a UNC Lineberger member and an associate professor in the UNC School of Medicine Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and in the Department of Neurology, was senior author of publications that appeared in the journals Brain Pathology and Neuro-Oncology.
In the journal Brain Pathology, Miller and other UNC collaborators report that intrinsic astrocyte heterogeneity — and potentially regional brain microenvironment — significantly contributes to glioma pathogenesis.
Miller and co-collaborators reported in the journal Neuro-Oncology of a study to model genetic alterations in human glioblastomas. To create the model, they induced Rb knockout, Kras activation, and Pten deletion mutations in cortical astrocytes in mice. The researchers believe the model may be useful for dissecting mechanisms behind treatment resistance in the disease, and developing more effective therapies.
