Evans and Perou featured in Science Magazine article on breast cancer genes

Science Magazine interviewed UNC Lineberger members Charles Perou, PhD, and James Evans, MD, PhD, for a special feature on “The ‘Other’ Breast Cancer Genes.”

In the article, Drs. Evans and Perou discuss the difficulties in deciding when to test patients for genetic mutations in the dozens of genes linked to breast cancer. The discovery of the links between mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 and breast cancer revolutionized treatment and diagnosis of some of the most aggressive forms of the disease revolutionized the treatment and detection of some of the most aggressive forms of the disease. In the quarter century since the identification of the BRCA genes, researchers have discovered dozens of other genes associated with breast cancer, presenting researchers and physicians with difficult questions about the ethics and efficacy of genetic testing.
